I recently wrote about the Future Microsoft Project Roadmap, which featured some exciting announcements, one of which was the ‘Project Home’ page. If you’re not aware, Project Home, provides users with a consolidated view of recent items (Projects).

Project Home is essentially the gateway to Project Online and is the first page you land on when you select the ‘Project’ icon on the Office 365 home page.

Within the Project Home page, you’ve got the ability to view your recent items and to create new projects, you can also navigate to Project Online by selecting ‘Go to Project Web App’.

Select the ‘Project’ icon on the Office 365 home page.

Within the Project Home page, you’ve got the ability to view your recent items and to create new projects, you can also navigate to Project Online by selecting ‘Go to Project Web App’.

Until recently, when you selected that link you were automatically redirected to the default PWA instance https://YOURTENANTNAME.sharepoint.com/sites/pwa – not ideal, especially in scenarios where you have multiple PWA instances, i.e. by subsidiary, department or location and need users to be directed to the appropriate PWA site.

So, we’re pleased to see that Microsoft took on board the feedback and have now made it possible for users to change the default Project Web App (PWA) site to their preferred PWA site. This allows Project Home users to define the creation location of new Project Online projects, and to access the right PWA site(s) from Project Home.

To change the default PWA site, simply follow the instructions below.

1. On the Office 365 navigation bar, select the ‘cog’ settings icon, select Default PWA site. In the Change default PWA site dialog box, you’ll see the existing / default PWA site URL.

2. Enter in the URL of the preferred PWA site. If you’re not sure about which PWA site, then speak to your Project Online administrator, and ensure that you have access to the site (create & read permissions). If you do mistype the URL you will be informed “No results returned”. Once you have entered in the correct URL and selected the Change site button, you will see a message confirming that your PWA site has been changed.

If, however you see a message stating, “You don’t have permissions to access this site”, you need to speak with the Project Online administrator to ensure you have read permissions as a minimum and create permissions if you need to create a new project.
