Launched in 2013, Microsoft Project Online is the official enterprise extension to Microsoft Project Professional and is available through Microsoft 365. As a leading enterprise solution for project & portfolio management (PPM) it has been the ‘go to’ choice for many looking for a powerful tool that enables better planning, objective portfolio prioritisation, improved resource management and streamlined reporting capabilities.

However in 2018 Microsoft announced that future innovation would focus on the newer ‘Project for the web‘ solution;

The new Microsoft Project

Microsoft Project for the web, was launched in 2019 and is built on the Microsoft Power Platform. The Power Platform consists of PowerApps, Power Automate, Power BI, and Dataverse. Dynamics 365 and a whole host of other modern Microsoft solutions are built around the same platform, which provides improved scalability and integration possibilities.

The new Microsoft Project provides a future proof PPM solution that can be accessed from almost anywhere on virtually any device by a variety of users, including PMO, portfolio & project managers, resource managers, team leads and other project team members.

Project for the web uses the same core Project license plans as Project Online:

  • Project Plan 1

  • Project Plan 3 (Project Online Professional)

  • Project Plan 5 (Project Online Premium)
