The APM Accredited PMO Practitioner Course – One Year On
On 14 & 15 November 2017, Wellingtone launched the PMO Practitioner course through a pilot with several Practitioners who attended to help us define the final content. Following this, the course was successfully Accredited by the Association for Project Management (APM) at the end of 2017.
Following the accreditation, we booked our first five courses to run through 2018, and quickly found them to be very popular.
Figure 1 Delegate Demographics
One year on, we have 167 Certified PMO Practitioners on 16 courses across the country with lots more booked to follow in their footsteps. We have also been able to establish a growing virtual community of PMO Practitioners who can support and keep in touch with, their peers and Wellingtone as they continue their PMO journey.
When asked for their biggest take away, our delegates said that the course changed their view of PMO, the competencies needed to succeed, and how to better engage with their Customers.
The course syllabus is aligned to both the Association for Project Management (APM) and Project Management Institute (PMI) Body of Knowledge 6th Edition. This allows us to offer a balanced view across the many facets that relate to the project management profession.
It takes the myths surrounding PMO, the theory that exists, and provides an agnostic and holistic view on how it can work in the real world; keeping an eye on emerging trends in our industry.
The PMO Practitioner course is designed for anyone who has a keen interest in PMOs, Practitioners (new and existing) who are delivering, managing, implementing or transforming a PMO.
With the growing interest in PMO, and thanks to the feedback from our delegates and their organisations, in 2019 we are excited to be launching the Wellingtone PMO Academy with two brand new courses:
This introductory course is designed for those starting out in their PMO journey, may not be active practitioners yet. Examples include graduate scheme, apprenticeship participants, those looking to explore the PMO industry as a career path, those in PMO support roles, and those wanting to find out more before implementing a PMO.
This course is designed for those pioneering the PMO in their organisations, who want to venture into new and uncharted territory and need practical support with the most challenging aspects of working or leading a PMO. Examples include PMO Managers and Heads of, PMO Practitioners looking to move to the next level, and those with tried and tested experience in the industry.
Our courses are aligned to the Wellingtone Competence Framework and support a clear progression in PMO skills and competencies.

The Wellingtone PMO Academy supports your journey through the PMO Career Ladder, enhancing the view of PMO as a profession with specific competencies, a clear career path, and specialist roles.
It provides an opportunity to create a ‘pick and mix’ of training to get the most out of your (and your PMO’s development) and create a practical toolbox to support your organisation regardless of the services your PMO offers, alongside the Wellingtone PMO Competence Framework which is designed to develop an individuals’ toolset, toolkit, and mindset, ready for success.

The Wellingtone PMO Academy celebrates the emerging PMO industry and aids practitioners in shining a light on their PMO and their organisation, through training, coaching, and events.
“We would like to thank all of our PMO Practitioners, and we hope you have enjoyed the course as much as we have enjoyed delivering it in this past year. We would love to and hope to continue supporting you through your journey!”
