Wellingtone, the leading PPM specialist, Microsoft Gold Partner, APM and IPMA Training Partner and AXELOS P3M3 Consultancy Partner, is celebrating its twentieth anniversary in this year.
Originally delivering contracted project management services, Wellingtone has moved with the times as the landscape evolves to focus on PPM, the role of the PMO, and the importance of innovation and upskilling across the sector.
Started in 2001 by Managing Director, Vince Hines (and named after a much-loved family pet), the company has grown consistently across the UK, Europe and the US. Its diverse client base spans all sectors, from the government to public sector, legal, science, industry, manufacturing, not for profit, retail and even Formula One!
Wellingtone’s dedication to working in transparent partnership with those clients is vital, according to Vince. “Our goal is to be the partner of choice for organisations looking to transform how they manage work,” he says. “We have matured to offer trusted PPM and PMO partnership globally, delivered by our outstanding people across all areas of strategy technology, training and tools.”
We believe in a ‘human first’ approach, acting as a critical friend and trusted expert as our clients tread the path towards the future of work management
Delivering strategic Microsoft solutions for clients worldwide
Baz Khinda, Commercial Director, brought his sales and technology expertise to Wellingtone in 2007. He now heads up Wellingtone’s well-established Microsoft Gold Partnership. “After we started delivering training in 2004, Microsoft invited us to join their partner programme in 2009 and we became a Gold Partner in 2011,” he recalls. “We’re now recognised as one of the top niche partners in the UK and Western Europe. We have specialised in Microsoft along with every project technology milestone – from Project Server through Project Online, Project for the Web and now the Power Platform. That longevity speaks volumes about our relationship with Microsoft – not just in the UK but in Ireland, Spain and the US – evident through the introductions we receive from customers who see us as a safe pair of hands.”
Supporting the PPM roadmap with end-to-end PMO expertise
Emma Arnaz-Pemberton joined Wellingtone in 2017 as Director of Consulting Services. She is the driving force behind Wellingtone’s industry-leading PMO capability. “Our relationship with Microsoft has evolved into something very special,” she says. “We partner on all sorts of programmes – from pro-bono work to thought leadership and training events. Equally, our affiliation with APM differentiates us. From launching PMO Academy to fill a need in the market, we now offer more APM accredited courses than any other company. We have built on that by joining forces with IPMA so that delegates can achieve practitioner and advanced PMO qualifications accredited by both associations. But we never rest on our laurels. In 2020, we also became an approved AXELOS P3M3 consultancy, further expanding the value we offer. We’re continuously improving year on year.”
Emma’s arrival also saw the launch of Future PMO. In just three years, this has become the largest UK based event for PMO practitioners, thanks to its outstanding learning programme and light-hearted retro staging. “The past three years have seen us manoeuvring everything from the DeLorean time machine to a life-sized Jabba the Hut into our venues!” says Emma. “That’s important. We believe our delegates deserve to play – as well as work – hard. We’re a close-knit company with a human outlook. It’s one of the reasons our reputation has grown so quickly and organically. We build relationships honestly and we’re interested in our clients’ long-term success. Project management isn’t just a work skill, it’s a life skill, and we like to embrace the fun, geeky side of life. Clients enjoy that refreshing approach.”
Adapting to an emerging new world of work
Sadly, delegates were unable to enjoy a face-to-face Future PMO during the 2020 pandemic. But that didn’t stop Wellingtone from delivering a week-long virtual event attended by more than 700 global delegates. Undeterred by the challenges of virtual working, the company has also unveiled new digital services, including e-learning via Wellingtone Academy and Dr PMO: an online drop-in clinic where clients can explore PMO pain points.
“I’m exceptionally proud of what we’ve achieved during Covid,” says Vince. “All our staff carried on working throughout. We continued to recruit and grow organically. A lot of that is based on referrals and repeat business from our wonderful clients, which is testament to our partnership with them.”
Now, as always, the company is looking to the future. As Vince points out, “interest in project management is constantly growing. Our goal mission, quite simply, is to help our clients improve their chances of project success. We’re now equipped to support the customer along the entire journey with a full-service portfolio. Our immediate priority is developing our services around Microsoft’s Power Platform. We have also just launched some brand new courses including the Change Management Practitioner, a Sponsors’ course, and an Agile course. We’re sufficiently mature and resourced to address all those different areas, and much more, simultaneously. We’ve got a great team of people who are genuine experts in their field. We love to see our clients’ achievements – we have even seen them win awards due to their work and our support. We are so grateful to them for their loyalty and openness, which has enabled us to support them as they achieve amazing things. We can’t wait to see where they go next!”
